Why does my jaw pop after removing braces?

I asked my dentist and he really didn't seem too concerned. I told him that after i stopped wearing the elastics and after he took off some of my braces, my jaw started to make little popping sounds as i chew. Most of the time it is just small and constant but sometimes there is a big pop that hurts. He gave me a very vague answer like, "it will happen sometimes and when it does try not to continue the action that makes it pop, because it will be worse when im older."
